Here is a brief study that analyzes the metal composition of two hip and knee implants and compares it to the metal content as listed by the manufacturer. In addition to the metals reported, the knee implant contained zirconium among many other compositions.
Metals can undergo a degree of corrosion and metal release after implantation. Release and corrosion of allergenic metals including nickel and cobalt can lead to metal-protein complex formation, hypersensitivity reactions and implant failure.
