Your Teeth Affect Your Overall Health

Each tooth is related to an acupuncture meridian which is related to various organs, tissues and glands in the body on this particular meridian or “energy highway.” This connection can often indicate your overall health and wellness by reviewing your dental condition. If a person has a weak internal organ, the condition of the associated meridian tooth could make it considerably more problematic.

If you look at this interactive Meridian Tooth Chart below you begin to understand the poor condition of some of your teeth and the corresponding problems you have that are actually linked, you can see that when we help fix a certain tooth we are helping to fix a certain area of your body too. Most people know that it makes sense to look after their teeth, but seeing the ramifications that this can have can be something of a revelation.

If you aren’t already diligently brushing and flossing your teeth every day, your Juuling habit could have serious consequences for your mouth.

Cnet vaping can give you cavities

Nearly one in 20 us adults now uses e-cigarettes, and more than half are under 35 years old, studies show. Thorn Yang/Pexels

You might already know that vaping comes with many health risks, including an increased risk for having a seizure or developing heart disease. But that list of health issues just keeps growing. New York periodontist Scott Froum, D.D.S. started noticing a troubling trend among his patients — those who used e-cigarettes (aka vaporizers) experienced significant tooth decay.

“We began seeing [the tooth decay], but didn’t realize what it was from,” Froum says. “We had been noticing it in teens that weren’t at risk and then attributing it to other things like Monster Energy-type drinks. We never realized that vaping could also be a cause.”

What the research says about how vaping harms your teeth

Anecdotal stories don’t definitively prove vaping makes your teeth rot, but they shouldn’t be dismissed outright either. Most experts agree that although e-cigarettes generally contain fewer toxins than tobacco cigarettes, that doesn’t mean they’re harmless. And after reviewing the evidence on how propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and nicotine — the three most common ingredients in e-cigarettes — can affect oral health, Froum thinks there’s cause for concern.

Propylene glycol, a liquid alcohol that’s often used in food processing because of its ability to mix well with flavoring ingredients, can lead to dry mouth, which (when chronic) can cause cavities and gum disease. PG also breaks down into acetic acid, lactic acid and propionaldehyde — all of which are known to deteriorate tooth enamel and soft tissues.

Research also shows that when teeth are exposed to vaping aerosol that contains a mix of vegetable glycerin and flavorings, they carry four times more bacteria than teeth that haven’t been exposed.

And what the research doesn’t say

Given the explosion of e-cigarette use, especially among kids — it increased 78% among high school students and 49% among middle school students between 2017 and 2018, according to the CDC — the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) to report on the potential public health consequences

Unfortunately, when it comes to oral health, NASEM researchers were unable to find any epidemiological studies examining the link between e-cigarette use and periodontal disease. And the clinical and in vitro studies that did exist only provided “limited evidence” that e-cigarette aerosol can cause cell damage in oral tissue.

August 2, 2019 — Which dental materials are responsible for the most contact allergies? Researchers looked at patient data and found metals topped the list, but other common culprits included composites and cosmetic materials.

The number of people with allergies is rising, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Nearly 40% of schoolchildren worldwide have a sensitivity or allergy, and some of those allergens appear in the dental office.

The researchers looked at documented contact allergy data from 86 patients who visited the prosthodontics clinics from 2012 to 2016. Women were far more likely to experience a contact allergy than men (84% versus 16%), they found. Patients with contact allergies also tended to be older with an average of five allergies.

Metals accounted for the largest percentage of contact allergy complaints. Nickel and cobalt were the most frequent metal allergens, but patients also reported reactions to amalgam, gold, and titanium.

“It is the dentist’s responsibility to choose which materials and combinations of materials to use.”
— Constanze Olms, Dr med dent, and colleagues

“Patients with objective and subjective symptoms of contact allergies to dental materials should not be exposed to allergens,” the authors wrote. “We recommend that in daily clinical practice dental professionals pay more attention to symptoms of contact allergy and allergy in the patient’s history. It is the dentist’s responsibility to choose which materials and combinations of materials to use.”

Finnish researchers at the University of Tampere have new findings that show the presence of common oral bacteria in cerebral emboli for the first time. The article that documents their findings, “Oral Bacterial Signatures in Cerebral Thrombi of Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke Treated With Thrombectomy,” focuses on the association between infection-causing oral bacteria and ischemic strokes.

The Journal of the American Heart Association published the research article on June 4, 2019.

An ischemic stroke occurs when the major blood vessels to the brain are blocked. Cerebral emboli are blood clots that break free from a blood vessel blockage and travel through the bloodstream to the brain. Clot removal, whether with medication or by mechanical treatment such as an endovascular procedure or a thrombectomy, is the way an ischemic stroke is treated.

It has been estimated that between 500 and 700 kinds of bacteria can live in the human mouth. Streptococcus species are common in the oral cavities of both healthy people and people who have periodontitis. Following trauma or dental procedures such as root canals or tooth extraction, oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and remain there up to a few hours but do not normally cause problems for healthy individuals.

Poor oral health is independently associated with problems in later life, according to the findings of a new study. The research shows that elderly people with muscular weakness, sudden weight loss or impaired mobility are substantially more prone to issues with their oral health.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, believes the oral health of older people remains an ongoing issue. Dr Carter says: “The first problems to occur are often because of a loss of dexterity.

Limited mobility, no matter how small, can have an extremely large effect of our ability to care for our own health. In terms of oral health, this means effective tooth brushing becomes much harder. Balanced nutrition also becomes more difficult. This often leads to more frequent sugar consumption.”

YOUR BRAIN COMMUNICATES WITH YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM, BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR GUT TALKS BACK?

Migraines are a genetic, neurological disorder that affects 1 in 4 households in the US. When a migraine attack hits, the central nervous system floods with pain after neurons deep in the brain become excitable and inflamed. Exciting new research suggests a strong gut-brain link.

Bacteria living in the gut can help explain why so many of us live with migraine disease and could eventually change the way it’s treated. Our guts are a habitat for a huge number of microorganisms called microflora. We have always seen the brain as the source for many of these diseases. Amazingly, the microflora in the gut may communicate with and influence the brain.

For some reason, a lot of people put oral care at the bottom of the list when it comes to healthcare. Many also don’t understand the extent to which our oral health can have an effect on other parts of our body and our general wellbeing.

The Body-Oral Health Connection
The mouth is a perfect breeding ground for all sorts of different bacteria. For the most part, these bacteria are generally harmless and can be dealt with using nothing but regular brushing and flossing.

However, when oral hygiene is neglected, these bacteria can lead to various diseases like gingivitis and tooth decay. And when the bacteria produced by these conditions start entering your system, you have a whole other problem on your hands. If left untreated, these bacteria could lead to a variety of health issues. There are also conditions like diabetes, for instance, that make sufferers even more vulnerable to oral conditions, which makes the chance of infections even worse.
