About the Doctor
Dr. Henriette Lerner is the founder and Director of HL Dentclinic and Academy in Baden Baden, Germany, which is an academic clitical, teaching and research facility of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, in Frankfurt on Main, Germany.
Dr. Lerner is the Past President of the Digital Dentistry Society International (ODS).
In 1990, Dr. Lemer was granted the degree of Doctor Medie (DMD degree from the Faculty of Dental Medicine, in Temeschburg, Romania and then completed har post graduate education in Oral Surgery, in Bucharest Romania. Later, Dr. Lerner’s education In Implant Dentistry was completed in Germany and at Boston University.

Dr. Joseph Sarkissian studied microbiology at the University of Alabama. He then attended the dental school of the University of Goettingen in the former West Germany, where he graduated in 1989.
Over the next eight years he practiced dentistry on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. During that time he trained in homeopathy, completely abandoned the use of amalgam (mercury) fillings, and expanded his knowledge in the biological aspects of therapy.

Dr. Luis A. Alicea was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He pursued studies at the University of Puerto Rico, School of Dentistry. He then completed his Masters Degree, and Prosthodontic residency at that campus, where he focused his training in the placement, and restoration of Dental Implants. He has taught as an Associate Professor in the Research, and Restorative Departments at the University of Puerto Rico, and continues to hold privileges as a professor Ad Honorem in that institution. Dr. Alicea also completed additional training towards certification as an IV Sedation provider, at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
Dr. Alicea is a member of the Peer Review Committee for “The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants”, and regularly reviews articles prior to publication for this Journal. He is a also member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American College of Prosthodontics, Florida Prosthodontic Association, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Academy of Osseointegration, American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, West Coast District Dental Association, Hillsborough County Dental Association, and also participates in the Seattle Study Club.
Dr. Alicea has an undeniable passion, and dedication for the dental profession. He has been practicing in the Greater Tampa bay area since 2007. He likes to give back to the community and participates of Dentistry from the Heart events. He loves spending time with his wife, daughter and twin sons.

ZERAMEX® P6 implants in site # 46-47 to replace failed endodontically treated teeth. The crowns are veneered zirconia – screwed in with VICARBO® Carbon Fiber Screws – 100% metal-free and cement free!
Basically this is a very good example of using ZERAMEX® P6 to replace infected posterior teeth. This lady was aware of the issues with titanium implants and had heard about ceramic implants. With ZERAMEX® P6 I was able to provide a solution superior to titanium from an aesthetic and biological point of view. The infected teeth were remove surgically with advanced extraction therapy, including MP3 and Mucograft. The implants were inserted 6 months later and then restored about 3 months later. The patient did not need to wear a protective splint because P6 is a two-part system. With the VICARBO® screw there is no metal and no cement and it is totally reversible, if necessary. Basically all the flexibility of a titanium implant system without the negative aspects.

As Michael Foley shared in the first part, ceramic implants have been around for 30 years. Until recently the biggest knock on them was they were brittle and could break more easily than titanium implants. That’s not the case anymore, Foley noted in a recent email interview.
“The materials have evolved a lot. ZERAMEX® uses bio-friendly HIP ARZ Zirconia with ceramic. Our use of a different extraction and production process has helped our new ceramic implants to work more like titanium implants,” he wrote. One difference in the extraction process is the Zirconia ZERAMEX® uses is made from the oxide of Zirconium. Zirconium is a metal and in its oxidized state it has all the benefits of a metal (magnetic, heat transference, strength) but doesn’t degrade like Zirconium and titanium.
Secondly, ZERAMEX® presses, sinters and heats the Zirconia before pressing it into a rod. “In this state it becomes exceptionally strong,” Mike says. “Two thousand megapascal vs 1200 megapascal for titanium.”
For those readers not fluent in pressure units and newtons (neither was I), suffice it to say 2,000 is stronger than 1,200 and that ceramic implants are much tougher than they used to be. We have had zero fractures or issues with this screw. It is really incredible,” he said.
Mike noted that the Vicarbo® screw is one of three pieces in a ZERAMEX® implant. “First is the implant that is surgically placed into the bone as an artificial tooth root – just like a titanium implant,” he noted. “Second is the abutment which is the crown and tooth portion, and third is the Vicarbo® screw which locks the root and tooth together.”
“The lateral forces pressing in between the implant and the abutment tightly seal the connection, preventing bacteria from entering the affected area and creating implantitis.”
“This is the sleeping dragon of dental implants,” Mike admitted. “We say that titanium implants have clinical success of 98 percent, but we don’t include the 20 percent of patients that get inflammation around the implant and have to return to the dentist for some sort of (gum) tissue treatment,” Mike said.
With his keen interest in bio-friendly dental solutions, this metal-free option is a huge factor for Mike and one of the primary reasons why he formed Emerginnova as a company focused on bio-friendly dental treatment.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is fused into your jaw to hold a dental crown, bridge, or denture. Dental implants provide a durable foundation for permanent or removable replacement teeth substituting for natural teeth. Implants have grown in popularity as technology evolves and baby boomers age.
For instance, dental implants offer several benefits over dentures, including comfort, durability, and convenience because they eliminate the need for dental adhesives. Most importantly, for those that love eating (you know who you are), implants make it easier to eat one’s favorite foods because implants don’t slip and slide like dentures often do.
Since the first implant, titanium has been the metal of choice. Titanium implants are incredibly sturdy and often last a lifetime, but they have been in use long enough now their benefits are showing a few “cracks.”
“Titanium is a metal. Metals conduct heat, they are magnetic, and different metals in the mouth can actually create a galvanic reaction…all of these facts about titanium leads to increased bacteria and plaque attaching to the surface of the implant,” Foley replied in an email interview with Agent Straight-Talk. Acids, salts and bacteria are all contributing to the degradation of the titanium, too, he added.
Michael “Mike” Foley has had an interest in biological dentistry since working as Anthogyr’s North American Agent of distribution and sales in 2006. Anthogyr is a dental equipment manufacturer based in France near Geneva, Switzerland.
Foley said over time Anthogyr moved into dental implants and today they enjoy worldwide popularity for their AXIOM line of implants.
Enter entrepreneur Mike Foley. Foley’s family is from Belgium, but he grew up around Atlanta where he attended the University of Georgia. Throughout school Foley had his eye on working in export management, representing the U.S. and managing sales to other countries, specifically Europe.
His fluency in French led to an opportunity with Anthogyr and their desire to bring their AXIOM implants into the U.S. market. Today Foley still works with the France-based manufacturer, but his role changed in 2014 when Anthogyr chose to focus their production “bite” on Europe and other markets.
Married and back in the U.S. with an infant son at the time, Foley recalls a light clicked on when solely by chance he attended a meeting in Miami with the International Academy of Ceramic Implants (IAOCI).
Foley’s research for Anthogyr showed that the market for titanium implants was leaning towards cheaper production costs and more commercial offerings. Intrigued by the idea of ceramic implants, Foley met with a surgeon named Jens Tartsch the following year in Zurich. Dr. Tartsch introduced Mike to the Zeramex system, a two-piece, screw-retained ceramic implant.
