Peri-implantitis has been receiving attention following recent studies that showed that it is highly prevalent and difficult to manage. This course will provide the latest evidence-based information on peri-implant diseases with emphasis on a team/interdisciplinary approach to treatment. The program will present the updates on the definition and etiology of peri-implantitis from the American Academy of Periodontology 2018 consensus meeting. The instructor will present research findings on risk factors for peri-implant disease and preventive measures to incorporate into the implant treatment plan prior to implant placement that include implant treatment planning, material selection for cementation, restorative design and maintenance. In addition, the program will review innovative therapeutic protocols for disease prevention and treatment and recent advancements in Implant cleaning instruments and chemotherapeutics.

Dr. Henriette Lerner is the founder and Director of HL Dentclinic and Academy in Baden Baden, Germany, which is an academic clitical, teaching and research facility of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, in Frankfurt on Main, Germany.

Dr. Jack Hahn has been placing and developing dental implants for more than 45 years. His innovations, including the original tapered implant have played a key role in making implant therapy the predictable mode of treatment it is today.
Dr. Hahn was involved in developing the Steri-Oss Dental Implant System in 1986 which was purchased by Nobel Biocare. He also developed the NobelReplace® dental implant system for Nobel Biocare and oversaw the design of the Hahn
Tapered Implant.
In 2015, he introduced the Hahn Tapered Implant System combines proven features with contemporary design, serving to make implant treatment simpler, safer, and more predictable than ever before.
ZERAMEX was honored to be his first reentry into ceramic implants with the ZERAMEX®XT .
In this interview, Dr. Hahn is discussing his legacy in dental implants including his experience and what he thinks of the future for ceramic implantology.

Dr. Jack Hahn earned his DDS from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, and completed postgraduate coursework at Boston University, New York University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Kentucky. A pioneer in the field of implant dentistry, Dr. Hahn has been placing and restoring implants for 45 years. Dr. Hahn developed the NobelReplace® dental implant system for Nobel Biocare (Yorba Linda, Calif.), and oversaw the design of the Hahn Tapered Implant. Recipient of the Aaron Gershkoff Lifetime Achievement Award in implant dentistry and the Venue and LEAD magazine Healthcare Leadership Award, Dr. Hahn was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry in June 2015. He lectures to dentists around the world and maintains a private practice in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He is committed to treating Dental Implant patients, as well as, Educating other Dental Professionals. Stefan Röhling
Dr Röhling received his dental degree from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, in 2009. Between 2007 and 2009 he has worked for AO Research Institute, Davos, Switzerland. Since 2009 to this day he has been working for the Clinic of Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery and for the High-Tech-Research-Center of CMF surgery of the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland. Between September 2013 and October 2014 Dr. Röhling has worked as a postdoctoral research fellow for the Department of Periodontics, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, USA (Chair: Prof. David L. Cochran). Dr. Röhling is a speaker for the International Team for Implantology and since 2006 he has been involved in many experimental and clinical studies dealing with zirconia dental implants. As first and co-author, he has published many journal articles dealing with ceramic implants and he is also first author of a book chapter dealing with dental implant surfaces.

We are witnessing a major shift led by the leading titanium implant companies to question titanium as the best material for tooth replacement.
A driving factor is the global rise in prevalence of peri-implantitis. Recent studies done by the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, New York City, New York, concluded that approximately 1/3 of the patients and 1/5 of all implants experienced peri-implantitis!
While everyone agrees that cement, ill fitting prosthetics can be part of the cause, this staggeringly negative statistic for titanium implants is leading the investigation for alternative solutions. Ceramic implants are being investigated as the leading candidate.
A study was conducted by the Department of Oral Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Graduate School, Kyushu Dental University, Fukuoka, Japan about the soft tissue biological response to Zirconia and metal implant abutments compared with natural tooth.
These results suggest that blood flow in tissue surrounding zirconia abutments is similar to that in soft tissue around natural teeth. Moreover, zirconia abutments could be advantageous for the maintenance of immune function by improving blood circulation.
