Finnish researchers at the University of Tampere have new findings that show the presence of common oral bacteria in cerebral emboli for the first time. The article that documents their findings, “Oral Bacterial Signatures in Cerebral Thrombi of Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke Treated With Thrombectomy,” focuses on the association between infection-causing oral bacteria and ischemic strokes.

The Journal of the American Heart Association published the research article on June 4, 2019.

An ischemic stroke occurs when the major blood vessels to the brain are blocked. Cerebral emboli are blood clots that break free from a blood vessel blockage and travel through the bloodstream to the brain. Clot removal, whether with medication or by mechanical treatment such as an endovascular procedure or a thrombectomy, is the way an ischemic stroke is treated.

It has been estimated that between 500 and 700 kinds of bacteria can live in the human mouth. Streptococcus species are common in the oral cavities of both healthy people and people who have periodontitis. Following trauma or dental procedures such as root canals or tooth extraction, oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and remain there up to a few hours but do not normally cause problems for healthy individuals.

Cleaning between your teeth regularly and avoiding gum disease can lower your risk of developing high blood pressure, according to the findings of a new study.

The research suggests that post-menopausal women who have suffered from tooth loss are 20% more likely to develop hypertension.

Poor oral health is independently associated with problems in later life, according to the findings of a new study. The research shows that elderly people with muscular weakness, sudden weight loss or impaired mobility are substantially more prone to issues with their oral health.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, believes the oral health of older people remains an ongoing issue. Dr Carter says: “The first problems to occur are often because of a loss of dexterity.

Limited mobility, no matter how small, can have an extremely large effect of our ability to care for our own health. In terms of oral health, this means effective tooth brushing becomes much harder. Balanced nutrition also becomes more difficult. This often leads to more frequent sugar consumption.”

A study performed in Finland found trace amounts of mouth bacteria present in brain clots of patients who suffered strokes. The takeaway?

Good oral hygiene does more than prevent cavities. It could help to prevent a stroke.

YOUR BRAIN COMMUNICATES WITH YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM, BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR GUT TALKS BACK?

Migraines are a genetic, neurological disorder that affects 1 in 4 households in the US. When a migraine attack hits, the central nervous system floods with pain after neurons deep in the brain become excitable and inflamed. Exciting new research suggests a strong gut-brain link.

Bacteria living in the gut can help explain why so many of us live with migraine disease and could eventually change the way it’s treated. Our guts are a habitat for a huge number of microorganisms called microflora. We have always seen the brain as the source for many of these diseases. Amazingly, the microflora in the gut may communicate with and influence the brain.

For some reason, a lot of people put oral care at the bottom of the list when it comes to healthcare. Many also don’t understand the extent to which our oral health can have an effect on other parts of our body and our general wellbeing.

The Body-Oral Health Connection
The mouth is a perfect breeding ground for all sorts of different bacteria. For the most part, these bacteria are generally harmless and can be dealt with using nothing but regular brushing and flossing.

However, when oral hygiene is neglected, these bacteria can lead to various diseases like gingivitis and tooth decay. And when the bacteria produced by these conditions start entering your system, you have a whole other problem on your hands. If left untreated, these bacteria could lead to a variety of health issues. There are also conditions like diabetes, for instance, that make sufferers even more vulnerable to oral conditions, which makes the chance of infections even worse.

Healthy teeth and gums are important for reasons other than showing off your smile.

Many people who need surgery – heart valve replacement in particular – might have to delay the procedure for weeks, or even months, because of poor dental health.

A dentist must first check for and eliminate any present or potential sources of infection, including gum disease, severe tooth decay, tooth abscess or any soreness in the mouth.

Prior to heart surgery, you will need a dental clearance exam, including X-rays to help your dentist detect damage and disease not visible during a regular dental examination.

Left untreated, bacteria in the mouth can travel through the bloodstream to the surgery site, causing complications such as infective endocarditis – a potentially life-threatening infection of the inner tissues of the heart, including the heart valves.

Depending on your history, getting dental clearance for surgery may require one appointment or several trips to your dentist.

Can you blame mom and dad for a patient’s caries? Maybe. An international team of researchers identified dozens of new genes associated with oral health and dental diseases. Their findings suggest many dental traits are heritable.

Scientists have long known that two people with similar diets and oral hygiene routines can have vastly different levels of oral health. Researchers explored whether genetics may explain this conundrum in a new study, published in Nature Communications (June 24, 2019).

“The study makes it clear that teeth are part of the body,” lead author Ingegerd Johansson, DDS, a senior professor at Umeå University in Sweden, stated in a press release. “Among other things, we can see that there seems to be a causal link between risk factors for cardiovascular disease and tooth decay.”
